What happens if I have my loft converted and it doesn't comply with the Building Regulations?

Depending on the severity of the non compliance the local authority can ask for the project to be returned to its original state. If the means of escape in case of fire is compromised this is taken most seriously. Most importantly, a non compliant loft conversion will have a detrimental affect on the value of your home.

Is there a minimum floor to ceiling height?
There is no minimum ceiling height for a room. However, a minimum of 2m of headroom on stairs and under beams is required. This is a critical design issue.

Can I renew the whole roof?
Yes, if the loft space isn't suitable for conversion and you have a detached property it may be possible to replace the entire roof structure and raise the ridge to gain additional internal headroom. However, this will require planning permission and we will support you through this process.
